The
DAV College Managing Committee (DAV CMC)
as a cultural and administrative monolith happens to be the biggest stake-holder
in academic management in India. Over the years, this nodal organization has
played a stellar role in rejuvenating the Indian society intellectually,
emotionally and spiritually.
THE GENESIS
DAV History
The
emergence of DAV ideology in the year 1884-85 underlines a water-shed moment in
the cultural annals of India. As the British noose tightened around our cultural
and social values, the entire Indian society lay confused and rudderless. It was
Maharishi Dayanand, the great pathmaker of
modern India, who gave a wake-up call to Indians to fight against the forces of
ignorance and cultural stasis by “Going back to Vedas”.
THE FOUNDATION
Institutionalization of DAV
The
first solid step taken to realize the dream and the vision of
Maharishi Dayanand was the
institutionalization of a socio-cultural organization befittingly named and
registered as DAV College Trust and Management
Society in 1886. Thus heralded the dawn of the DAV movement, which
continues to pursue relentlessly its mission to usher in national awakening and
cultural resurrection through the medium of a progressive and value-based
educational model. This model has the acronym of DAV
as its mascot: D stands for
Dayanand, A
for Anglo and V
for Vedic. Thus the DAV model envisages an
eclectic system of education which strives to temper the synergy of Vedic
heritage with the Anglo-western scientific outlook.
THE LEGACY
DAV Role Models
The DAV Trust and Management Society
founded its first DAV School at
Lahore
in
1886 with Lala Hans Raj (later venerated
as Mahatma Hans Raj Ji) as its honorary
HeadMaster. A great academic, social and cultural role-model, it was
Mahatma Hans Raj who almost martyred himself
to give true direction, definition and identity to the DAV movement.
THE RESURGENCE
Carrying the Baton on
Thus started the
movement, which right from the beginning was led by missionaries, visionaries,
nationalistic and other like-minded savants. They virtually became the linch-pins
of DAV umbrella. As the times rolled on, there emerged new needs, new challenges
and new decisions in tandem with the changing scenario. The DAV Movement
continued to surge ahead with might and main under the dynamic and motivating
captaincy of Sh Mehr Chand, Lala Balraj, Justice Mehar Chand Mahajan, Dr G L
Dutta, Lala Suraj Bhan, Prof Ved Vyas, Sh Darbari Lal and Sh T R Tuli. It was
their missionary consciousness that fostered the growth of many more
institutions across the country.
Fortunately
enough, the DAV movement is presently being led from the front by Sh. G.P.
Chopra (Padamshree) who has the poise and the dignity of an icon. A man with
enormous networking ability, clout and charisma, he has brought in a rare
sensitivity and propriety to his position.
THE DAV COLLEGE MANAGING COMMITTEE

DAV AS A UNIQUE BRAND
Alive and kicking
The
DAV now is not mere a name but a domain and an academic brand. And this brand is
not a commercial venture but a service provider: It has always taken academics
as a matter of culture rather than a product to be consumed.
It has
a genuine identity and panache, longevity and experience, history & heritage. It
is an attitude and a way of life people identify with, and have trust in. By
judiciously capitalizing on skills and experiences gathered over the years, it
has an unenviable portfolio of academic programmes.
Presently, it is running under its wings about 800 institutions of different
shades and hues touching disciplines and domains like Humanities, Commerce,
Fundamental Sciences, Biotechnology, Media, Video Production, Management, IT,
Medicine, Dental Sciences, Engineering, Technology, Communication, Nursing,
Hospital Management, Air Services etc.

globally respected IT leaders, management institutes and corporate houses in
India and abroad for broadening its global reach and footprint in various
sun-rise areas like Management, Bio-technology, Hospitality, Bio-informatics,
Genomics, Media, IT, Air Services, Communication etc. It is also sharing
consultancy skills with many of them. Many DAV institutes have guest and adjunct
faculty drawn from academia, industry and corporate world. It is already having
long-ranging MoUs for planning, executing and supervising academic programmes
with almost 115 corporates, business houses and financial conglomerates like
Ambanis, Ambujas, ACC, BBMB, Adani, Larsen and Tubero, Tata Steel, NTPC, Indian
Oil Corporation, Reserve Bank of India etc.
INTERFACING WITH MILIEU
Social Engineering
For
the DAVs, the education is a matter of culture, nation building and freedom. For
them, academic arena is not a bazaar where products are sold like foodstuffs,
cars and clothings. As a carrier of certain core values, DAVs are out to plug
the holes in the moral ozone of society. They are out to work for value
education by sensitizing the students and the society at large for uprooting
different kinds of social maladies, and by getting them anchored to our moral
and cultural moorings. Thriving on social capital, they have rose like one body
to help the earthquake victims in Kohat, Kashmir and Bhuj, Tsunami victims in
Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. They are running a number of orphanages, service
schools, old-age houses, infirmaries and reformatories besides sensitizing the
people with lot many Awareness Camps (Chetna Shivirs) organized in
various institutes under the aegis of Arya Pradeshik
Pratinidhi Sabha,
New Delhi.
CHANGING LANES
Chanting the IT Mantra
In an
age of sky colleges, net universities and virtual paathshalas, DAVs are
not resting on their laurels. Recognizing the huge media explosion in the wake
of ICT revolution, the DAV CMC is all geared up to ride the crest of
e-revolution by diversifying its ventures to new technologies, platforms and
domains. Its schools and colleges are building enormous e-infrastructure and
e-expertise. The delivery techniques are moving from the formal to the informal,
from the analogue to the digital, and from the terrestrial to the satellite
mode. Every institute is re-inventing itself to be the site of the burgeoning
e-revolution.
AND THE MARCH CONTINUES….
Logging onto the Future
The
chips are drawn and the dye is already cast. DAV is destined to become an
electronic oracle and
a knowledge-web of the whole world. A
strategic brainstorming is already in session to build up
centrally-located technical logistics for
controlling and commanding the digital revolution and its ripple-effects to the
DAV institutions all over India. These logistics are proposed to work under the
DAV Media Centre likely to be located in
Delhi. Efforts are already on for creating a
Knowledge Park
(somewhere in Jalandhar) as a repository of components, frame-works and
solutions. DAVs have already started working to ride the bandwagon of
online/offline education facilitated by
broadband revolution, sure connectivity, and everywhere accessibility. The
Edusat and the ETV
experiments have already been tried and tested at some DAV pockets.
E-governance, Tele-Video Conferencing, Mobile Learning and Netphone teaching are
becoming favourite platforms in the mainstreams DAV institutes. All this is the
tip of the iceberg. We at DAV are in for more dramatic experiences and
exposures.
The
DAV have really taken marathon strides by moving from a wooden takhti in
a gurukul to a slate to a blackboard to an electronic White Board, and
now to a digital wi-fi SchoolPad.
The journey goes on
