Vedic Mohan Ashram

Swami Dayanand, one of the greatest reformers of the 19th Century, waged a war against social evils such as superstitious, false religious beliefs, illiteracy, sati and the clash of caste and creed. For this purpose he traveled throughout the country and in 1867, on the occasion of Kumbh Mela, he unfurled Pakhand Khandani Pataka on the place where the Vedic Mohan Ashram stands today. In fact he began his crusade against social evils from this place which has great sentimental significance for the Arya Samajis all over India and abroad who come to visit this hallowed Ashram. It was at this Bhupatwala, Haridwar that the Vedic Mohan Trust was founded in 1912 with 32 trustees. Right from the beginning, the Trust ad eminent men from the DAV organization and the Arya Samaj like Mahatma Hans Raj ji, Swami Tek Chand ji, Rai Bahadur Bakshi Sohan Lal ji, Lala Durga Das ji, Pundit Shiv Dutt Ram ji, Swami Achuta Nand ji, Pandit Jagat Singh ji, as some of the founder trustees of the ashram. The present trustees are men whose services to the country are well known.

At present the trust is headed by Padmashri Shri GP Chopra, an eminent educationist, who is also the President of DAV College Managing Committee, which manages about 700 educational institutions. Shri Chopra is also the President of Arya Pradeshik Pratinidhi Sabha, which runs hundreds of Arya Samajs all over the country and abroad.

He is also the Vice President, DAV College Managing Committee and the Vice President of the Arya Pradeshik Pratinidhi Sabha. Shri Vishwa Nath's father, Shri Raj Pal, a staunch Arya Samajist, was assassinated in Lahore by a religious fanatic and was posthumously honored with the "Freedom of Expression Award" by the Home Minister, Government of India, is a trustee of the Ashram.

Kunwar Brij Bhushan, former Mayor of Dehradun, a man with great social commitment and a prominent citizen of Dehradun, whose ancestors, in 1908 had donated the piece of land where today stands Vedic Ashram, is a trustee of the ashram.

The Secretary of the Trust, Shri T R Gupta, is a retired Principal of a highly prestigious educational institution and currently the Chairman of the Nuclear Medicine and bone Densitometry center, Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi.

Other trustees are also men of repute and good social standing. All are committed to the aims and objects of the Ashram and doing their best to carry forward the torch of Vedic ideals and social and spiritual upliftment as started by Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati.

This trust, which was founded in 1912, has been, since then, propagating the Vedic ideals, which are dear to the people of India. Thousands of students of DAV Schools and Colleges from different parts of the country have been regularly attending eight-day Charitra Nirman Shivir and three-day Vedic Chetna Shivirs. The Shivir held from 18th to 25th October, 2001 was presided over by Shri Narayan Singh Rana, Minister of Sports, Government of Uttranchal. It was felt that after leaving the portals of DAV institutions, these students would bring about a change for the better in the society. Thousands of Arya Samajis, as well as the general public, have been visiting the ashram and holding meetings, religious discourses, etc since the inception of the Ashram.
